Let's Talk Sustainability
Everyone wants to be more sustainable but what does it really mean?
Sustainability means doing things in a way that takes the future generations and the future of our planet into consideration. Another way of understanding it is if a practice is sustainable, can it “sustain” overt time? Can this practice be done over and over and sustain the planet? We’re going to cover how we practice sustainability here at DESYLLAS.
VEGAN LEATHER
Our shoes are made using a high-quality PU that is made in Italy. Although this isn’t our end goal, as it is plastic based, we are happy to be using PU over leather because of both the animal ethics and sustainability factor. What most people overlook with animal leather is the resources, waste, land, water, the greenhouse gas emissions, energy, toxins, and chemicals involved in producing and then tanning the cow skin to make it into leather. For ethical reasons we use vegan leather, but another benefit is that vegan leather is more environmentally friendly. According to the Higg Index graph, the production of synthetic leather is far less environmentally damaging than the production of leather.
SMALL BATCH ORDERS
Ordering small batches and not over producing is important for us. Most big brands will over produce, sell what sells, and then the rest ends up thrown away or burnt. Reports show that around 80% of our textiles end up in landfill. Our approach is to produce what will be used. We work closely with manufacturers that support small batch orders.
SLOW FASHION
Fast fashion is getting faster and faster, trends are changing so rapidly and to a point where people can’t keep up. There are now 52 mini seasons in a year in the fast fashion industry, yep… one a week. Fast fashion culture includes buying an item, wearing it once or twice, and then buying another piece, and another piece. Once the trend is over, the pieces will have no value and will most likely end up being thrown out and end up in landfill.
We are passionate about creating shoes that you genuinely love and become part of your wardrobe, to be worn over years. We design for style, not trends. Style is timeless.
HIGH QUALITY
We are all about paying a little extra for higher quality materials and higher quality production. Both our materials and production are in Italy, where quality is of the highest standard. When pieces are higher quality, they are more durable and more loveable.
ONE TREE PLANTED
We have now partnered with One Tree Planted which means that for every shoe sold one tree is planted. We have chosen to plant trees in Australia, as DESYLLAS is an Australian label, where they work closely with indigenous communities to plant trees in western Australia and New Zealand. The plantation helps with bushfire recovery and habitat restoration. This is part of our mission to offset our environmental impact.
These are our current sustainable practices here at DESYLLAS. Sustainability is something that is always evolving, and we can’t wait for the next chapter.
